Let’s say you’ve got an older, but reliable car. It’s gotten you where you need to go and survived longer than you thought. Sure, it’s got some bumps and bruises on it, but you’ve got more important things to worry about, and you’re not sure you can afford to really take care of those little cracks in your windshield. Besides, they’re just little cracks…. nothing to worry about, right?
Wrong! Your windshield is more than just a shielding protecting you from bugs hitting your face as you rush through traffic to get to work. It’s actually a safety element of your vehicle…so much that you can actually get a ticket if a cop deems it unsafe. And tickets can get pricey!
Those little cracks can start to spread and spider out. If you can catch it, it’s a lot safer and cheaper to go ahead and have your windshield repaired. For under $75, you can have a professional come to your location to do this, if the damage is under the size of a quarter. Usually, this can be taken care of, and you’ll be on your way, in under an hour. If those little cracks start to spread, the integrity of the entire windshield is at stake.
While you don’t have to worry about your windshield crashing in on you (it’s made of stronger stuff than that), you DO have to worry about the crack spreading to where it gets in your line of sight, water leaks coming in, and those nasty tickets we already discussed. So take care of the car that takes care of you, and get those cracks treated! Auto Glass Chattanooga LLC will help you determine whether your windshield needs replaced or simply repaired.
Do you need your automobile windshield repaired or replaced?
With a repair, the windshield will not have to be removed. Our technician removes the air from the crack or chip by filling the hole with a color matched resin. Generally, the damage is practically invisible, but this process can sometimes leave a blur or slight shadow behind, where the chip or crack was, but it stops the chip from spreading further. This process generally takes
15 to 30 minutes, and you are able to drive the vehicle right away. Remember, cracks WILL spread. Try to catch and take care of this as soon as possible to avoid a full replacement.
With a full windshield replacement, the entire windshield will be removed, and a new windshield is installed. Urethane is applied to the frame of the vehicle and bonds the new windshield. This process can take 45 minutes to an hour to complete, and you’ll need to let the urethane set for at least 45 minutes before driving the vehicle.
If you aren’t sure whether you need an auto glass replacement or repair, take a look at the damage. If you can cover the crack or chip with a quarter, it is probably safe to say a repair will solve your problem. However, anything bigger than this size and you’ll need to consider a full replacement.
What can I expect with an auto glass replacement?
When you call for a quote, our customer service rep will need to know the year, make and model of the vehicle. They will then ask if it is a windshield, side glass, back glass or vent glass.
For the windshield, they’ll also need to know if the glass is heated, tinted, if you have a rain sensor (do your wipers come on automatically when it rains?), and if your rear view mirror dims automatically, or if you have a tab on it to adjust it. All of these things are needed to insure they order the correct piece for you. The glass ordered is new, will be of OEM quality (made to the same specifications as the brand name), and will generally be identical to the one being replaced. Our technicians will vacuum out most visible, broken glass from the interior, but we still recommend getting the vehicle detailed for any missed pieces of glass.
Craftsmanship is guaranteed, and we warranty our work against any air or water leaks for as long as you own the vehicle. We cannot warranty against any outside forces, such as a break-in or another crack in the glass. Visit autoglass-chattanooga.com
